Historic Wharton In 1838, the Republic of Texas started the Caney Run mail route. On that route, some of Stephen F. Austin's original 100 colonists settled. (At one point, some of Tami Sewell's relatives worked with Stephen F. Austin while surveying the great land of Texas.) Later the town was named after two leaders from the Texas Independence, John and William Wharton. During the long history of Wharton, the town boasted a cotton oil mill, sugar cane factory, gristmills, cotton gins, milk processing plant, and oil production. Continuing in the long tradition of hard working people, the Sewell family opened a one-of-a-kind western store. Situated on the corner of the town square, the Korner Korral's windows overlook the 1893 courthouse. This provides the stage for the customer's down-home experience.
..................................................... Walls have been hand painted by a fellow Whartonian,Jane Dorn. Racks showcase custom western wear, ornate wall hangings, purses, and jewelery. For those that have been "born to be wild," yet not dress western, there is motorcycle wear. The Sewell family even hand makes furniture out of old barn wood. What a great way to recycle the old to make into new and fabulous! There motto is:If you can dream it, we can build it. Come visit the Sewell family's store right on the corner of Wharton's town square that is called the Korner Korral!
